FEDERAL WAY TO ACTIVATE OVERNIGHT SEVERE WEATHER SHELTER IN RESPONSE TO FREEZING TEMPERATURES

Mayor Jim Ferrell is working with FUSION to help keep the Federal Way community warm due to extended cold temperatures.

The City of Federal Way is partnering with FUSION to activate a severe weather shelter tonight, Monday, Dec. 2. FUSION’s shelter will temporarily accommodate homeless individuals based on availability at 1505 S. 328th Street, Federal Way, 98003.

Weekend Road Closures: Portions of I-5 and Southbound SR 167 in Kent and Federal Way for Roadwork and Detours

I-5 overnight closures

Both directions of I-5 between SR 18 in Federal Way and 54th Avenue East in Fife will be closed overnight on Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28. Northbound lanes are closed by 10:30 p.m. and southbound lanes by 11 p.m. Lanes begin reopening at 7 a.m. on Saturday with all lanes open by 11 a.m. On Sunday, lanes begin reopening at 8 a.m. with all lanes open by noon.

Mayor Ferrell is proactively preparing for the dangers of the forecast, which calls for temperatures to reach the 90s this Fourth of July weekend.

The City of Federal Way is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of the FWCC leisure pool

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 16. The Federal Way Community Center (FWCC) leisure pool will reopen at 10:30 a.m. After the ceremony, Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell will be available for interviews to discuss its significance to the community.

FWCC Serves As A Cooling Center To Help Residents Beat The Heat This Weekend

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for portions of Puget Sound on August 26-27. The forecast calls for temperatures to reach the high 80s in Federal Way on Saturday and Sunday.

"The City of Federal Way is taking action by opening our FWCC as a cooling center during regular business hours in case anyone needs it," Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell said. "We want the community to know we're here for them in case heat or smoke becomes hazardous. We are committed to protecting our residents whenever there is a heat advisory in our community." 

The Federal Way Community Center opens its doors as a cooling center through Wednesday

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that our area will reach the red category with excessive heat from the 80s to the low-90s through Wednesday, August 16. This heat level can adversely affect individuals who do not have adequate cooling and hydration.

The Federal Way Community Center (FWCC) will serve as our cooling center during regular business hours when excessive heat warnings are in our service area.

If you're experiencing the sweltering heat this week, you and your family are welcome to seek relief at the center.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Washington State, effective from Saturday, May 13, to Monday, May 15. The year's highest temperatures will reach the 80s and 90s across Western Washington. 

The Federal Way Community Center (FWCC) will serve as a cooling space during regular business hours anytime excessive heat warnings are in effect for our service area. This service is available to everyone who seeks relief from the heat.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) awarded the City of Federal Way the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.
