The City of Federal Way has completed the purchase of a portion of land on the northwest section of Steel Lake. The property consists of five-and-a-half acres, which sits on the shoreline of Steel Lake and stretches to S. 304th Street.
The majority of the land, including the portion on the lake, is wetlands and is being purchased as a conservation property. Funding for the property came from funds managed by Public Works and Parks and Recreation.
The rest of the land will be held for a potential future park. There are no plans to build a new park on the land any time soon, but the City will maintain the chance to do so in the future.
βWaterfront property in any city is a fleeting resourceβless and less of it is available over time,β said Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell. βSo, when an opportunity to purchase land on water arises, it is in the cityβs best interest to make the most of it. We are excited about the potential of this property and the areas it will allow residents to access.β
