Battery Recycling

Batteries power millions of everyday devices, but their improper disposal can create fast-moving fires that are difficult to extinguish. Batteries should not be placed in the trash, and instead can be dropped off for recycling at many spots around Federal Way. 


City Drop-Off Locations

These locations are available for free battery recycling around the city: 


Accepted Batteries:

The City of Federal Way Environmental Services is currently accepting the following rechargeable batteries and single-use/Alkaline batteries in our battery collection bins:

Alkaline/single use batteries:

  • AA, AAA, 9-volt,
  • C cell, D cell, button cell,
  • Lithium Primary,
  • Carbon Zinc

Rechargeable batteries:

  • Nickel Cadmium,
  • Lithium Ion,
  • Small Sealed Lead Acid,
  • Nickle Metal Hydride,
  • Nickle Zinc

General types of batteries, including Lithium Metal, Alkaline, Carbon Zinc, Silver Oxide, Zinc AIr, Lithium Ion, Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, Lead Acid, And Rechargeable Alkaline.

 

Please Note:

  • We can only take limited quantities of batteries and we will ask that you bag them before putting into the battery bins. 
  • We cannot accept damaged, defective, recalled batteries, car batteries. These should be taken to the Auburn Wastemobile
  • All batteries contain chemicals. Some of these chemicals β€” especially lead, nickel, cadmium, mercury, zinc and silver β€” can be problematic if they are leaked or released into our environment. This is why it is important that they be handled correctly according to type.
