Event Description
Join us via Zoom for a free class that covers dehydrating and freeze-drying food. There is no easier way to preserve food to make it last without refrigeration then drying. It is one of the fastest and least expensive ways to save your harvest. It also helps to reduce home food waste, stock the pantry for convenience, and make light weight ready-to-eat meals for emergencies or outdoors adventures.
In this workshop we will cover the basics of what dehydrating is, comparing home dehydrators, and exploring how to use dehydrated foods in daily cooking or in emergencies. There will also be a short exploration of home food freeze dryers.
Class attendees can test out their new skills by checking out food preservation equipment like food dehydrators and freeze dryers from the South King Tool Library. Sign up for a free membership at www.SouthKingTools.org.
This class will be taught by Hal Meng, the Director for the Center for Food Preservation Arts. Hal is committed to community-based efforts to build sustainability and self-sufficiency for all people through the traditions of food preservation at home and in community kitchens. He works collaboratively with nonprofits to provide services like Preservinβ for the Hungry which produces jams and fruit sauces for food banks as well as offering in-person and online education in food preservation.
