Mitigate: Identify hazards, reduce risk and effects of disasters

Whether fire, flood, wind, or snow there are things that families and individuals can do to mitigate the effects of natura disasters. Clearing brush, increasing drainage, and trimming trees are simple measures that reduce the loss from natural disasters.

Prepare: Individuals, Families & Pets

You may need to survive on your own after a disaster. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for as long as two weeks. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days. We're encouraging you to be two weeks ready for anything.

Basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, internet or even your cell phones may be cut off for many days. You may even have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and take essentials with you. You probably will not have the opportunity to shop or search for the supplies you need.

Respond: Put your plan into action

Having family communication and action plans that you rehearse will allow you to confidently and calmly react to any emergency or disaster. Register for Alert King County and monitor the City's Website for emergency messages. And "like" and "follow" The City of Federal Way on X (formerly known as Twitter) for additional information.

Recover: Get back to normal, or a new normal, as fast as possible
